Who We Are
The Congregation of Holy Cross was founded in 1837, in Sainte-Croix, France, by Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C. We are an apostolic religious family composed of brothers, sisters and priests “bound together in one indivisible brotherhood.” Our charism is to be educators in faith, hope, and love — forming young people and serving the poor with the heart of Christ. In Ghana, the Province of West Africa is a community of religious Brothers serving the people of God.
Our Provincial Headquarters are in Cape Coast at the Provincial House and Holy Cross communities. The first Holy Cross missionaries arrived in Ghana in 1957, and today our Brothers serve across the country — teaching in schools, staffing parishes, running youth programmes, and accompanying families through the joys and crosses of daily life.
Today, we actively minister in France, USA, Canada, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania — united by the Cross of Christ and the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, our patroness.

Requirements & Admission
General
The applicant must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic. The process of admission takes at least one year of regular contact with the Vocations Office through writing or personal visits.
Men between the ages of 18 and 35 who feel drawn to consecrated life as a religious Brother of Holy Cross — living in community and serving in schools, parishes, and youth ministry — are welcome to begin the conversation.
Academic
Academic requirements follow the national standards of Ghana’s education system:
- Ghana (WASSCE / SSSCE): Passes in four core subjects — English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies — plus three relevant electives, with an aggregate of 24 or better.
- A-level or equivalent tertiary candidates are also welcome to apply through the Vocations Office.
Spiritual
More than grades, we look for a life rooted in Christ.
- Active participation in parish life, youth groups, or campus ministries.
- A consistent practice of daily prayer, frequent reception of the Eucharist, and regular Confession.
- A genuine desire to serve God’s people — especially the poor, the young, and the marginalized — in the family spirit of Holy Cross.
- Patience, generosity, and a willingness to let God’s will unfold over time.
Personal
Religious life is lived in community, so maturity and readiness matter.
- Good physical and mental health, free from conditions that would prevent living a full community life.
- Freedom from canonical impediments (no prior marriage vows, no outstanding debt obligations that would prevent entrance, etc.).
- Support from your family, parish priest, or spiritual director — their prayers carry you through the application year.
