Highlights from the Maiden Provincial Chapter of West Africa

The long-awaited maiden Provincial Chapter of the Province of West Africa concluded on Saturday, July 13, 2024. The chapter was held with the theme: “Holy Cross in West Africa Discerning Together for Mission; Ave Crux Spes Unica.” During the chapter proceedings, several key events and decisions were made.
Election of New Provincial Leadership:
The chapter delegates elected Br. John Badu Affum, C.S.C., as the new Provincial Superior of the Province. Br. Matthew Sabogu, C.S.C., and Br. Kenneth Goode, C.S.C., were elected as the two Provincial Councilors. Br. John Affum will present up to 4 additional names to the Superior General for approval to assist in steering the province until the next chapter.
The Presence and Contributions of General Leadership:
The presence and contributions of the Congregation’s Superior General, Br. Paul Bednarczyk, C.S.C., and the Third General Assistant, Fr. Andrew Gawrych, C.S.C., were highlighted as a blessing for the province. Their exhortations and inputs were highly appreciated by the chapter delegates.
Acknowledgements and Appreciations:
The Provincial, Br. John Badu Affum, C.S.C., expressed gratitude to several key individuals and groups who contributed to the success of the chapter:
• The Provincial Superior of the Midwest Province, who guided the Province of West Africa to this milestone
• The Provincial Superior of the Province of East Africa and his two companions, Br. John Bailanda, C.S.C., and Fr. Peter Qorro, C.S.C.
• The chapter moderators, Fr. Joseph Blay, O.F.M. Conv., and Br. Paul Mensah, C.S.C.
• All the support staff, including the kitchen, social department, sound system, generator crew, photography, secretaries, tellers, steering committee, and other departments that worked together to make the chapter a success.
Closing Mass and Dinner:
The chapter concluded with a closing Mass officiated by Fr. Andrew Gawrych, C.S.C., followed by a Chapter Group Photo. Archbishop Charles Gabriel Palma-Buckle and Archbishop Emeritus Matthias Nketsia joined the community for the Dinner.
